Penang: Day 3

Day 3: Flood!

All of us wake up groggily and realised that our area was flooded. The whole stretch of road was flooded and we cannot drive out.

We are so stuck in out apartment. Doomed!

taken outside our window. Luckily our apartment compound was not flooded. Just the main road outsite.

We searched the whole place and to our horror, the house was not stocked with Maggi Mees!!! Die lor, stuck in flood and there's no food for the five of us... Oh NO! This is bad. Really bad.

I kept smsed Snoopy not to come because the road was flooded but hor he didn't reply me lor...i was so worried that he will force his way through and spoil his car...

see that arrow? that's Bomba Bot Penyelamat lor. See how dramatic the situation was?

40 minutes later...

Ding dong ding dong!

We were all wondering who's that when i went and open the door.

Surprise!!!!!!!

Standing in front of me is a wet Snoopy holding an umbrella in one hand and another two very big heavy plastic bags in another.

Snoopy brings food! He tapao breakfast for us! Yayy!!!!! We will not die of starvation afterall. Wahhhh Snoopy is like our savior...That moment is like so dramatic la....All of us were so happy to see him and relieved that we have food even though we were stranded in our apartment.

This is what Snoopy brings for us. A lot hor? Stranded in flood also got Hokkien Mee (Prawn Mee in Klang) for breakfast yay!!!

Snoopy: Our savior! He carry all those heavy foods and walked in from some construction site to minimized passing the flood area to deliver to us lor...See, how sweet of him? Because of this, his finger was numb and lost sensory feeling for a few days. Luckily now his fingers are ok d now thank God...

my bro was happily playing with his new toy amidst the flood

Once we see the flood water subside a little bit, all of us faster run away and we headed to Swatow Lane for lunch. Our lunch is at New World Park. The fact that all of us are starving, it did not occur to us to stop and take photos. Gomen!!! But the food there is just as delicious as i remembered it. Fantastic!

After lunch, we went to...

Khoo Kongsi

Khoo Kongsi (Khoo Clan House) main building

me and my dark knight^.^

very Justice Bao thingy, isn't?

some fascinating drawing on the wall...insert is the sticker that you need to stick on in order to visit Khoo Kongsi

see how big this Khoo clan is...

group photo

Hahahaha our professional photographer and his....umbrella boy?!

Next we go to,

Cheah Kongsi

see the red banner behind me? that's the banner that says the building is under UNESCO World Heritage Site. Khoo Kongsi has it, Cheah Kongsi has it, Ceong Fatt Tze Mansion has it and many more. So if you wanna sight seeing Penang's historical/heritage places, look out for all this red banners!

look at those good ol' "bangku"

Dinner: BBQ Steamboat
It's located at Jalan Nagore, behind Penang Plaza and it's buffet style. RM 19.00
per pax. It has two soup base, tomyam and soup. The aluminium foil area around the soup pot is for you to BBQ grill your food!

look at all those food on the table, this is only our first round ^.^v

Roy's busy putting butter to grill food

this is how it looks like once we are done eating...look at all those carbon on the aluminium foil...

ice-cream for dessert. Not only do they have ice cream for dessert, they have chocolate fondue, mix fruit cocktail, mini fruit tarts and some kuihs as well...talk about choices...

After that we went and round the Penang town for a night view. We even went to "Love Lane" but everything seems very decent so...a bit dissapointed. Perhaps "Love" needs a break too. Its Hari Raya eve so perhaps all balik kampung d haha

We went to Gurney Drive for a walk lor. The sea water is polluted with junks but the tide is high

cold cool pose!

can you guessed which is which?

That's a wrap for Day 3. No supper that night because everyone is still full from the BBQ steamboat...and we are just across the road from the famous Gurney Drive makan place...wuwu..

Penang: Day 2

Day 2: we had less than 5 hours worth of sleep.

Its drizzling and we fervently pray that it'll stop or else we are doomed.

We had breakfast at morning market nearby where the food was cheap but delicious. Not to mentioned, variety of choices available. No photos taken because our brain was not fully functioning yet-.-"

First stop: Penang Hill / Bukit Bendera
It was closed for renovation. Dang! We go all the way and to be told by the sign at the gate that it's closed? We want cable car! *grumble grumble*

2nd stop: Botanical Garden
We passed by Youth Park but decided to forgo it since it's still drizzling so we head straight to Botanical Garden for a walk instead although it's still drizzling anyway

free-styla!

After a walk, we headed to the stall that sells "bread ice-cream". Literary it is a two full scoops of ice-cream (you can choose up to two flavours of your choice) sandwiched in between the bread.

Very yummy. Very Unique.

Haha since we are totally engrossed in our new found favourite dessert, we forgot to take any photos! paiseh!

3rd stop: Penang Bowl
Still raining so the only place we can go is indoor. We chose the oldest bowling centre in Penang.

It stopped raining liao.
4th stop: Penang Road
we walk around Penang Road and most people did not leave empty handed. I got myself a cute bag at a very good price haha so happy. My bro lagi happy, his wish come true ler, i buy him a big remote control car. See how good i can be to my bro? *eyelashes fluttering rapidly*

What's Penang Road with the famous Penang Road Cendol?
Even Phua Chu Kang and Rosie went there ler...dun pray-pray ar...

Penang Road Cendol. A must for me whenever i go to Penang

all of us enjoying cendol except for Rae. She ordered ice kacang with ice cream topping

5th stop: Lorong Selamat Char Koay Teow
Eversince i heard so much of it i really wanted to give it a try. Alisan even swear that it's the best Char Koey Teow in the world! May said the auntie who fried it wears goggles. How dramatic is that? And we have to wait forever for our Char Koey Teow to arrive.

True to its reputation, it was great. Charcoal fried Koey Teow really tasted nicer. I like!

But it sure doesn't come cheap lor. One plate of plain Char Koey Teow cost RM5.50, with egg RM6.00 and "special" RM8.00. Haha and the thing is, this "special" Char Koey Teow only have extra 2 prawns and is served in glass plate!

We practically round the whole Penang Island Town by car because it keeps raining and we can't stop at anywhere. So in the end, we passed by Esplanade, Fort Cornwallis, Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (it was closed by the time we were there), pray at Goddess of Mercy (Kuan Yin) Temple and i can't recall if there's anywhere else.

Dinner: Thai Food at a restaurant named Atawoo
The food there was super delicious. Totally recommended for anyone who likes Thai food.
Rating: Both thumbs-up.
Price is very reasonable too!!!

group photo

Let's see what we've ordered: L-R fried sotong, tom yam soup, otak-otak ala thai (insert), asparagus and green curry (best green curry i have ever had!)

Then we went to Kek Lok Si.

It was closed.

Snoopy keep shaking his head and ranted that never in his life he heard of Kek Lok Si close (although Win & Roy both are more skeptical of the idea of visiting Kek Lok Si at night because people usually visit in the morning) erm....no idea!

Kek Lok Si Temple at night

SS ourselves since no people around to bother us anyway!

After that we went to Queensbay Mall just for this;
Haha seems like my influence quite big, i managed to tempted the others and stirred their curiosity

A copy of Taiwan's famous street snack concept
Should be only available in Penang as i know of...please correct me if im wrong

Menu in toilet bowl shape

group photo again

the concept store that sells not just ice-cream, but solid food as well
take a look at the insert carefully: that's your seat haha!

this is what we've ordered

cute miniature toilet bowls in different colours and sizes

If you look hard enough, you will see that the top-right hand T.Bowl has poker card imprinted on it. Poker on toilet bowl??? is that weird or what?

Rae & Roy actually promoting the toilet bowl...

My verdict of this shop: so-so lar... 5/10
Seriously, other than the ambiance, the dessert there were just so-so only lor. Not very nice. It's kind of below my expectation lor, i thought it will be like the one in Taiwan where the ice-cream they serves is really like the product we produced in the toilet, brown brown (you get my meaning) but they are less adventurous it seems.

Supper: New Lane hawker stall

Wahhh the food there was so delicious lor and reasonably priced. In fact, most of us agreed that the Char Koey Teow at New Lane was as great as the one in Lrg Selamat, if not better. Priced at RM3.50-4.00 it has the same amount of prawns just like the Lrg Selamat's RM6.00 lor. Save money save time, worth it ler? you decide for yourself la.

That's about the end of Day 2...

Penang: Day 1

OK here is the travel log for our trip to Penang!!!

I have tried my best to keep it short and its not easy to select only a handful of photos i tell you. And this is only Day 1.

Enjoy.

The five of us (Roy, Win, Rae, Bro and I) depart from Klang at 9:00am and had our 2nd breakfast at Bidor, Perak.

Not too hard to guess what are we eating right?

Yup that's right! Bidor's specialty, "Duck thigh mee" and "wu kok" (err fried yam?)

15 minutes later...

We reached Penang roughly at 2pm and we went and "check in" at our apartment to drop the luggage and freshen up (the apartment is courtesy of Snoopy's godmom who so kindly offered us the whole house to ourselves while we are at Penang)

Our first stop in Penang: Coconut ice-cream Buddhist Temple, or fondly called the Sleeping/Reclining Buddha Temple

Group photo in front of the temple

Sleeping Buddha behind us

Then we crossed the road to the opposite Burmese Temple

Front View

this is a "Tower of Peace" and that's Rae's finger

look at the intricate gold roof...impressive!

* In front of this building there's a small pond with a stone-made Lotus strike right in the middle. Inside the lotus there's a bowl, so usually what people do is make a wish and throw coin(s) into it. Obviously the aim is inside the bowl lor, or managed to get into the lotus also jadi-lah.

Win managed to hit jackpot on first try. Right inside the bowl while me, my coin fell into the pond instead *kuakuakua*
the difference between winner and loser(sort of)

we were locked inside the temple because it's slightly pass 5pm sobs!

haha so maybe they do leave the door partially open for us but the main gate is really locked i tell you...im serious! we had quite a scare...

Dinner: Seafood at Bagan Bukit Tambun, Penang mainland. *saliva drooling*

this is our dinner. guess how much we pay for it?
Hint* very cheap!*

do you know what those sticks are for? for you to smash your crab. hahahahaha eh really wan. i'm serious ok? hahaha i have the same expression as you back then^.^

After dinner, we take ferry back to the island. Per car charge RM7.70 and the passenger is free!

camwhoring in the huge ferry

Once we reached the island, we headed to Batu Ferringhi to shop in the night market for DVDs

in front of the infamous The Ship with Rae's new bag

Supper: some hawker centre. We wanted to go eat "lok lok" de but the stall closed d, well it's after 12am...

So that's the end of Day 1...

I'm BACK!

Haha im back!!!!

My trip to Penang was awesome. Quite fun and adventurous. Haha simply exceed any expectation and even more of the unexpected.

This trip was pretty much UN-conventional. NOthing goes according to plan. Snoopy's list of itinerary we pretty much jumbled up and we follow instinct instead. Snoopy's itinerary was specific right from day one to the last day but alas, we human can only plan, but God who decide.

So happened we went to Penang during the Ninth Month of Chinese Lunar Calendar. This is the time where most Buddhist celebrate the Nine God Festival and be vegetarian for nine days. Nine God Festival also symbolize raining (because most of the time it surely rain during this time of the year) And, rain it does.

Although this trip doesn't go according to plan, and the weather was cooling (contrary to Penang hot weather), the road was wet and slippery, but still, i enjoyed every minute of it. Also most of the time it rained and we have to carry umbrellas, but we can still be happy and cheerful despite the sombre weather.

I truly believes that traveling needs good companion. It doesn't matter where we go, so long we go with the right group of people then the atmosphere will be a whole of difference. I'm so glad that i went with Rae, Roy, Win, Bro and of course Snoopy the tour guide. Haha and we do have an excellent tour guide for food! Historical wise....erm Snoopy still needs some polishing hahaha!

One thing that will never fail is F.O.O.D.

We eat like nobody's business and we keep eating for the whole trip. Now that i'm back, i dare not weigh myself. I don't want to know the truth that i've gain weight

Roy's objective is met: eat a lot a lot of delicious local cuisines (pass with flying colours because exceed his expectation. He is amazed that Penang actually have that many places to eat til you drop)

Rae's objective is NOT met: to visit many historical sites and tourist attraction places (failed due to the constant rain and short visiting time) Plus, to eat the best Hokkien Mee of the Hokkien Mee (because that particular shop/stall was closed when we went there)

Haha this sounds like we need another trip down to Penang soon!! Yay!!!! Hehehe....

I will upload the photos as soon as i've got the complete set of photos from everyone...
